Environmental Policy

Our Cement Division works under a certified environmental management system, which is the best tool for all concerned to improve and foster the sustainable development of modern society.

All our cement plants have controls of this sort and painstakingly adhere to the European Eco-management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) Regulation.

Our commitment to the environment is yielding ongoing improvements and some very positive results. Our four primary objectives within that commitment are:

  • To combat climate change: This is one of the Group’s main challenges. By using alternative fuels and decarbonated raw materials, we have reduced our factories’ CO2 emissions.
  • To reduce emissions: We respect emissions limits. Our emissions are controlled constantly by special emission-measuring tools operated by government agencies.
  • To reduce the visual impact of what we do and to foster biodiversity:We have restoration plans for returning the quarries we use to their original, natural state.
  • To be eco-efficient in our use of natural resources:We implement sustainable development practices, such as replacing natural raw materials with materials obtained from waste and by-products. That way we lower our consumption of non-renewable materials, we avoid the impact of quarrying and we send a lot less waste to landfills.

Restaoration and Biodiversity

In 2012 45% of the area quarried by the Group was restored and 9% was in the process of being restored. Using waste to fill our raw material needs means we don’t have to quarry such large amounts of natural materials.

Climate Change

Thanks to our effort to combat climate change, in 2012 we avoided emitting 180,000 tons of CO2 (equivalent to the emissions created by using 54,000 vehicles for a year) by replacing traditional kiln fuel with alternative fuels based on biomass.

Emissions Reduction

The amount of CO2 emissions the Group avoided in 2012 by using biomass is equivalent to the emissions stemming from the use of 54,000 vehicles for a year. Good practices like this foster sustainable development.
